New season honey from Schoolhouse Apiary.

Laura Heiman of Schoolhouse Apiary will have the first of this summer’s honey – clear, light yellow and with a distinctive, complex flavor. The flavor of local honey varies with the season, and early season honey is Laura’s favorites. Laura says this year’s comb honey is among the best she has ever had, so try some now while supplies last. Honey vinegar made from mead is Laura’s special product for 2014. Since it has to age 1 full year she waited

Ceramics artist is intrigued by repeating forms

Grew up:

Sheridan, Wyoming

Current residence:

Northfield, Minnesota

Notable:

Holds a master of fine arts degree in ceramics from Bowling Green State University and graduated from Carleton College with a bachelor’s degree in Studio Art

Day job: Manages the Northfield Arts Guild Gallery.

Art history:

I have been working in ceramics for more than 12 years. I especially enjoy making objects out of porcelain – it looks delicate but is quite durable. I was an artist in residence at Ox-Bow, affiliated with the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and also the Appalachian Center for Craft in Tennessee and The Pottery Workshop in Jingdezhen, China.

Favorite technique:

Throwing multiple forms on the wheel. The technique is well suited for making functional ware and creating installation pieces. My installations rely on the recurrence of smaller forms to engage the viewer. I am attracted to the rhythm that is generated when they repeat and begin to energize the space around them.

What people should know about your work:

I mix my own porcelain in order to obtain a clean, white clay body. Although I do make sculptural work, I also love pottery. It is a great feeling when people develop a special relationship with my functional work by using it every day.
