Jalapeno jelly and fresh salsa are featured at Mississippi Hills CSA. Adam Week’s Jalapeno jelly is sweet with a spicy kick and tastes wonderful as a spread with cream cheese. Adam’s salsa is inspired by his grandmother’s recipe and comes in medium and hot. Adam’s fall vegetables include pumpkins, spaghetti squash, kale, salad greens, and flavorful broccoli. Get Adam’s popular broccoli while you can, as next Saturday is likely to be the last of the season.

Mississippi Hills Farm Grows Tasty Broccoli

Adam Weeks of Mississippi Hills

Adam Weeks of Mississippi Hills

Mississippi Hills farm grows especially wonderful tasting broccoli, cabbage, and anything else in the brassica (cruciferous) plant family (that’s everything related to mustard, cabbage, and broccoli). Adam Weeks says its because the farm has rich, fertile soil and has been organic long before Mississippi Hills was established. Cows were pastured on the land for 50 years before Mississippi Hills was started, and that certainly helped too! Weather permitting Adam will have tomatoes soon, perhaps even this week. Look for heirloom varieties and sun gold cherry tomatoes. Check out the green peppers and fragrant basil. Adam’s mom Mary has started helping out on Saturdays, so drop by to meet her.

Chris Casper is staying close to home in the Midwest for his current photos. The Western landscapes Chris photographed in 2013 lend themselves to grand vistas. In Minnesota a photographer needs to look for intimate images, and finding intimate views takes familiarity. Some of Chris’s best photos are right outside his house – views of his driveway and the across the road in various

seasons of the year. Walking along the driveway one day the light and color were perfect and resulted in a vibrant, almost florescent, green image of an intimate Midwest lane.

Vintage Band Festival

The Vintage Band Festival is back this Saturday with 12 bands in 12 hours. That means they have to start early, which is good news for Riverwalk Market Fair. While browsing art and seasonal produce enjoy the New Prague Area Community Band, the Sheldon Theater Brass Band, the Bridge Square Band, and “Swing and a Miss” old time dance band. Stock up on goodies for your picnic, bring your chair, and stay all day for brass band music from civil war to old time swing and jazz.

Mississippi Hills Makes Salsa

Adam Weeks of Mississippi Hills CSA has been making lots of salsa.  Lots.  Inspired by his grandmother’s recipe, he measures exactly the amount of tomatoes needed and then improvises with different combinations of chili peppers, bell peppers, cumin, cayenne, salt and pepper.  Each batch is unique, and they are all delicious.  Also look for Adam’s homemade jellies in a variety of flavors.

Handbags, Hats, and Aprons by Prairie Sun Design

Before she became Riverwalk Market Fair’s manager, Nancy Stroessner was a seamstress and operated a retail store.  So it was only a matter of time before she set up her own Riverwalk booth as Prairie Sun Design to showcase her colorful handbags, hats, and aprons.  Nancy’s handbags are made from upholstery fabric and without hardware.  “I wanted to make them very lightweight,” she says.  Her hats are made of soft fleece with applique – perfect for the coming cold weather.  Soon to come are handbags made from men’s wool jackets in plaids and tweeds.  Never one to waste anything, Nancy even turns the leftover fabric into colorful buttons.

Musicians Amy and Adams

Amy and Mark Adams-Westin will perform Saturday, August 14 at Riverwalk Market Fair.

Amy and Mark Adams-Westin will perform Saturday, October 5 at Riverwalk Market Fair.

Twin Cities musicians Amy and Mark Adams-Westin return to Riverwalk Market Fair for the second time in 2013.  Those who missed them earlier in the season are in for a treat, and those who saw them before may want to come back.  Amy and Mark’s 5th album, Gone… Aloft is a compilation of original tunes ranging with styles ranging from “Country/Blues/Grassified” to “icy jazz combo attack”, with a tour through bossa nova and steel drum Caribbean Buffet.  Amy and Mark will have all of their CD’s available for purchase at Riverwalk on Saturday.
