Special Features Saturday September 1st

This Saturday will bring out the kid in visitors of Riverwalk Market Fair in Northfield. Vendors will offer sugar-dipped delights and art to sweeten your heart or put a smile on your lips.  Youth entrepreneurs will be spinning with creativity and a yoga class will smooth out any rough edges on a lazy Saturday.

Featured Artists: Mary Rossing and Wendy Nordquist

Mary Rossing (left) and Wendy Nordquist (right) will be representing The Local Joint, a Northfield shop carrying vintage and handmade art offered by a variety of local vendors. Rossing is not only Northfield’s mayor and a former downtown business owner, she also is an artist who graduated from St. Olaf College with a studio art degree in 1984. She primarily works in pastel on paper and her creations often incorporate inspirational and whimsical quotations.

Wendy Nordquist has been working with fabric since the tender age of six when she started sewing clothing for her trolls. Today she sews patterned clothing including her signature aprons that are so much fun, people wear them for all types of domestic occasions from cooking to gardening.

Featured Food Artisan: River City Caramelcorn

Denise Metras of River City Carmelcorn has been perfecting her grandma’s all-natural caramel corn recipe for almost a decade. Recently, she decided the outstanding results should be shared with a broader market than her family. “The feedback I have gotten over the years is ‘the crispier the better,’” says Metras. “It’s all in the temperature and timing.”  Metras’  husband Rob often helps at her booth, and her four boys have been willing tasters as she has honed the family recipe. In addition to starting her new business, Metras works part time at Fairview Ridges Hospital in Burnsville as a staffing specialist.

Heartwork Yoga Offers Free Kids Yoga

Heartwork Yoga studio will offer free Kids Yoga at the Fair this Saturday, and invites children of all ages, including young-at-heart adults, to participate. The relaxing all-comers class will be held from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. along the riverfront in Bridge Square and will be taught by Amanda Hanson, Michele Garcia, and Kelly Smith. The three yoga instructors recently graduated from the Heartwork Yoga Teacher Training.

In the Youth Booth, Alex Baraniak, owner of Twisted Yarn, will sell handmade necklaces and bracelets, and students from the Northfield Union of Youth (The Key, pictured above) will cater to discerning dogs and dog-lovers with their homemade canine treats.
